God has treated us with dignity by granting us free will, the power to make our own decisions. Neither he nor destiny control our lives. Let examine what the Bible teaches about this. God created man in his image (Genesis 1:26). Unlike animals, which act primarily on instinct, we are similar to our Creator. In what sense? On the one hand, we can reflect divine qualities, such as love and justice. And just like him, we have free will. To a large extent, our future depends on ourselves. God invites us to choose life by listening to his voice, that is, choosing to obey his commandments (Deuteronomy 30:? 19, 20). Such an invitation would be meaningless, and even cruel, if we lacked the freedom to choose. Instead of forcing us to obey Him, God lovingly asks us: Oh, that you would really pay attention to my commandments! Then your peace would become just like a river (Isaiah 48:18). Destiny is not what determines success or failure. If we want our plans to prosper, we must work hard. Whatever your hand finds to do, declares the Bible, do it in your own power. (Ecclesiastes 9:10) He also states that the plans of a diligent man are sure to lead to advantage (Proverbs 21:5). Free will is a valuable gift from God, thanks to which we can love him with all [our] heart, that is, because we want to (Matthew 22:37). Isnt God supposed to control everything? The Scriptures teach that God is all-powerful; that no one but himself can set limits to it (Job 37:23; Isaiah 40:26). Now, he does not use his power to control everything. The Bible indicates, for example, that God was holding back from acting against the ancient Babylonians, enemies of his people (Isaiah 42:14). Likewise, he has decided to tolerate those who use his free will to do harm. But he gladdens us to know that he will not tolerate them forever (Psalm 37, 10, 11). |
